How did you start your career in science?
I’ve always had an interest in the complex interplay between humans and nature, and how this relationship is constantly evolving. I am particularly fascinated with the nature of DNA, which is an amazing, ancient evolving program of life. I got my B.S. in Biology at the University of Iceland and then I went on to study plant molecular genetics. I have this urge to analyse and find rational explanation for natural reality - I think that is also a part of my drive for innovative thinking.
What do “growth factors” do for skin?
From birth until adulthood, our bodies manufacture copious amounts of proteins called growth factors that communicate with cells, sending messages to repair, rejuvenate, etc. We like to think of them as musical conductors instructing all the different cells how and when to perform.
EGF is one of the most important growth factors in our skin and plays a critical role in regulating the skin’s biology.
It is essential to all regenerative skin functions, like the production of collagen and elastin, as well as increasing the skin’s ability to retain moisture – so it is very much responsible for rejuvenating the skin and keeping it looking healthy and youthful.
Why does Bioeffect produce EGF in barley?
The reason why we wanted to use plants was that we believe plants are an excellent platform for producing pure human proteins.
In barley we found a system that is both very efficient and flexible – and the barley seed loves producing human growth factors. Before, EGF was either produced in bacteria, which poses a risk of endotoxins, or extracted from human or animal cells, which presents ethical, moral, and legal issues. Producing EGF in barley is safer, purer, and more stable – which makes it the perfect choice for clean, healthy skincare.
How would you prep skin for summer?
Maintaining skin’s hydration is key in the warmer summer months. But I recommend swapping out heavier formulations for lighter ones during the daytime, for example our lightweight BioEffect EGF Essence, that the skin simply drinks up. You can still use the BioEffect EGF Serum in the evening to strengthen and repair the skin while you sleep. Lastly, I recommend wearing sunscreen year-round, but it is even more important to be diligent during the summer months.
Can I use both the EGF day serum and EGF serum and what is the difference between the two?
Both are hydrating and having powerful anti-aging benefits, but their main difference is simply texture. BioEffect EGF Serum is a luxurious viscous formula and is best used at night while your skin is in its repair phase. BioEffect EGF Day Serum is a lightweight gel formula that provides a silky-smooth finish, perfect for daytime use under makeup and sunscreen. However, depending on your preference, you can use either one both morning and night.
The product you can’t live without?
The EGF Serum is still my absolute favourite after all these years!
