What is Ginseng?

Ginseng is a root that is popular in its use as a herbal supplement, traditionally for its wide range of health benefits. It comes from plants in genus Panax, which includes about 200 species. Korean ginseng, Ginseng panax, What is Ginseng?is the most popular and is considered the most potent of the Ginseng genus. It is a perennial plant that grows naturally in the mountains of East Asia. Though originally harvested from the wild, ginseng is now cultivated and harvested when the plant is at least 5 years old. Some growers will wait for at least 7 years before harvesting.

Once harvested, the roots are processed, generally with one of 2 methods. The first method requires the least processing whereby the roots are simply dried in the sun. This process produces “white ginseng”. The second method involves the roots being steamed first, and then dried. This method produces the “red ginseng”.

American ginseng, Panax quinquefolius, is native to North America. American Ginseng is used as a stimulant, though it is considered to be inferior to the Korean ginseng, it does however have other health benefits.

Siberian Ginseng is derived from an unrelated plant, Eleutherococcus senticosus, though it has similar properties to Ginseng it does not contain the same active ingredient.

What are the Health Benefits of Ginseng?

Korean ginseng has been used as an alternative medicine to treat many different health issues due to its qualities as an adaptogen and is now being used to help with a variety of health issues. It is also believed to help with blood sugar control, improve immune function, and improve focus. The side effects of Ginseng are not well known, but they can include headaches, insomnia, high blood pressure, weight gain and menstrual problems. Ginseng should not be used for extended periods of time.
