There are a number of things you can do to relieve and prevent acid reflux, including:
- Eat smaller, more frequent meals: Eating large meals can put more pressure on your stomach and increase the risk of acid reflux. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can help to reduce this risk.
- Avoid certain foods and drinks: Some foods and drinks can trigger acid reflux, such as fatty foods, spicy foods, citrus fruits, and chocolate. It is also important to avoid caffeine and alcohol, as these can relax the esophageal sphincter and allow stomach acid to back up.
- Elevate your head when sleeping: Elevating your head by 6 to 8 inches when you sleep can help to prevent stomach acid from backing up into your esophagus.
- Take over-the-counter or prescription medications: There are a number of over-the-counter and prescription medications that can help to relieve acid reflux. If you have frequent or severe acid reflux, talk to your doctor about the best treatment options for you.
