Witch hazel is one of the oldest botanical ingredients still in regular use – an extract from the bark and leaves of Hamamelis virginiana, traditionally used as a toner and still valued for its astringent character. It leaves skin feeling refreshed and looking matte, which is why it turns up so often in toners for oilier skin.
Worth knowing: formulations vary enormously. Traditional distillates are preserved with alcohol, which can feel drying on some skin, while modern alcohol-free extracts are considerably gentler. If your skin is dry or sensitive, check the label. Part of our active skincare range.
