Q&A with Roger Aoun, Founder of BeautyLab

Q&A with Roger Aoun, Founder of BeautyLab

By M. Borriero
Beauty Lab Owner Rigen Aoun

This week we spoke to Skin Technologist and Expert Roger Aoun, founder of the multi-award winning skincare brand BeautyLab, a well-known British brand renowned for its innovative formulations that combine peptides and rare gemstones, alongside plant and marine actives, minerals, vitamins and proteins.

What’s the story behind BeautyLab, and how did it all start?

In the late ‘90s, I set up a London-based laboratory, specialising in researching ground-breaking beauty ingredients. With many years’ experience in skincare ingredient technology and product formulation, it soon made sense for me to also develop my own brand. So, in 2001, BeautyLab was born.

The brand was originally developed for celebrity facialists. It fast developed into an established salon/spa/clinic brand and is now also very much a retail brand. The concept now is the same as it was when I started: to create intelligent, high-performance products that re-activate and re-educate the skin’s functions, and deliver both instant and long-term results.

What are the key ingredients used in your formulations?

BeautyLab is probably best known for its diamond skincare, as in the Black Diamond range, but peptides play a huge part in our collections - as does stem cell technology, precious gemstones, pure oils, vitamins and plant actives. Plus, any other ingredients that make the difference. We’re not afraid to push the boundaries when it comes to innovation.

Who would you recommend Beauty Lab to?

Each of the BeautyLab ranges target specific skin type and concerns. So effectively, we offer something for everyone. For example, our Anti-Ageing range was developed for aged/prematurely skin that’s dry, lacking resilience or experiencing fine lines and wrinkles - whilst our glamourising Black Diamond range was developed for all complexions, including that those are lacking vibrancy, uneven in tone or with small imperfections. Our Youth Elixir range is centred around stem cell technology and was created for skin that is already aged, thinning, lacking firmness, hyperpigmented or experiencing deep lines and wrinkles.

We offer products for skin that’s sun-damaged to acne-prone, from combination to very dry... and everything in between.

What’s so special about the BeautyLab Black Diamond Range?

BeautyLab Black Diamond

As we age, our skin loses the ability to reflect blue light. This means that it takes on a dull, tired appearance. Encapsulated diamond cores bring back the skin’s ability to reflect blue light -giving the skin a luminous, more youthful looking appearance. They deliver a soft-focus effect that fills out fine lines and blurs the visibility of wrinkles, shadows, pigmentation and unevenness.

We include other gemstones in the Black Diamond range too, such as sapphire and ruby, that condition the skin and energise cells, as well as mother of pearl that gives the complexion a smooth pearl-like finish. The range is also rich in peptides. It hydrates, plumps and softens the skin, and improves firmness and suppleness. It’s delivers an instant photo-ready look, and has been used at red carpet events, on TV and at fashion shows, where skin needs to look absolutely flawless.

How should I look after my skin as we head into Summer?

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate! It will really give your skin a fresh-faced glow after the colder months. For the face, BeautyLab GlycoWash 5% is fantastic. We advise to use this product in the evening, two or three times a week. Stop using it a week before you hit the sun, as the skin will become more sensitive to sunlight.

After exfoliation, it’s important to use a sunscreen. BeautyLab Anti-Ageing Sun Protection Lotion SPF50 is perfect. It provides a powerful shield against harmful rays, offers antioxidant protection, hydrates and works to prevent the appearance of dark spots, wrinkles or sagging. It can be used on the face or body, is lightweight, non-greasy and doesn’t leave a white residue either.

Which products would you recommend for hyperpigmentation?

For the face, BeautyLab Retinol Serum. As well as retinol, it contains ceramides, niacinamide, squalane, vitamins C and E and pro-vitamin B5. It’s great for reducing skin discolouration (as well as large pores, blemishes and dullness) and works to unify and brighten the skin’s surface.

For the hands, BeautyLab Tripeptide Collagen Hand Mask. It contains lemon peel, sea kelp, liquorice, soya bean and phospholipids, as well as (obviously!) tripeptide collagen. We say that this product ‘gives hands the nurturing nourishment they deserve’ and it really does! It lightens the appearance of pigment spots, brightens the skin and works to even out skin tone - as well as offering fantastic moisturisation and helping to reduce wrinkles.

What are some of your best-selling products?

GlycoWash 5% is certainly a best seller, as is BeautyLab Instant Renewal Eye Complex. It combats eye bags, fine lines, puffiness and dark circles. It fills wrinkles with light-reflecting particles for immediate soft focus correction.

Our BeautyLab Relax Neuropeptide Serum is a well-established favourite. A global award-winner, it instantly smooths the appearance of laugh and frown lines, works to relax facial muscles, reduces the depth of expression wrinkles and gives skin a youthful ‘bounce’.

BeautyLab Ceramide Mask

Another best-seller would be the award-winning BeautyLab Re-energizing Ceramide Mask. It combines Hawaiian sea plant, ceramides, peptides, hydro-silk and wild yam. Ideal for any skin type, it noticeably improves the complexion’s texture, tone and vitality. Perfect for when skin needs a hydrating, brightening pick-me-up.

The product you can’t live without?

BeautyLab Relax Neuropeptide Serum. Without a doubt!
