Q&A with Codex Labs: Plant based Biotech Solution

Q&A with Codex Labs: Plant based Biotech Solution

By M. Borriero

This week we spoke to Codex Beauty Labs, the high-performance, ultra-clean and sustainable skincare brand. The award winning-range is formulated with the purest, high-quality and bio-available ingredients on the planet, while providing the most effective and visible results.

Codex Beauty

What's Codex Beauty Labs background and what makes the range different from other brands?

Codex is a scientist founded brand so we started with plant biology and blended that with proprietary biotech innovations to create the most effective formulas around. Given our reverence for plant biology we work with ethno-botanists and plant scientists around the world and formulate with the highest quality ingredients. We also back any and all claims with real Efficacy Trials. Beauty industry standards are all over the place and not regulated, so we created a new standard known as the Codex Beauty Code to bring products to market that are proven, sustainable and adhere to good manufacturing practices.

What's the secret recipe of Codex Beauty’s Bia collection?

The Bia Collection harnesses the untapped power of indigenous Irish botanicals and cutting-edge, green technology. Created by a team of experts knowledgeable in herbal science, cosmetic chemistry, dermatology, horticulture, and biotechnology. The real ‘secret’ lies in our proprietary Bia Complex™. BiaComplex is a very special formula of macerated oil infusions of calendula, immortelle or flower everlasting and comfrey blended together with water infusions of heartsease and mallow to form a deeply nourishing elixir.

Each of the plant extracts addresses hydration in a certain way: Immortelle flower keeps the skin covered with a protective film to trap in moisture; comfrey has keratolytic properties that help shed the drier, outer layers of the epidermis; and heartsease contains polysaccharides that boost the skin’s capacity to retain water by improving osmotic function.

What’s really interesting about the BiaComplex is that we’ve taken traditional, exceptionally pure methods of extraction, such as simple oil and water infusions, which are typically done by hand or in small batches, and worked with our master craftsmen to produce large quantities without compromising on quality or potency.

Who would you recommend Codex Beauty to?

Our line is meant for everyone. You’ll note the scents are not overly floral but rather are herbaceous lending to our unisex appeal. So our customers are women and men who simply look to us for the most effective, safe, sustainable and bio-available ingredients around.

Can people with very sensitive skin or suffering from eczema use Codex Beauty Labs?

Skin Superfood was really created as a solution-based product and is an exceptional treatment cream for eczema and psoriasis sufferers. It can be used as a daily moisturiser without worry or aggravation of those skin concerns. It is meant to be a multi-purpose product that has healing and calming properties. Think after sun care and dry flaky patches. You can see why it’s a beloved product.

What's the skincare routine you suggest for the winter months?

Winter is a time to pull out all the protective and hydrating essentials. And the Bia range was made with wild Irish weather in mind so we created a step by step routine for customers:

Step 1: Cleanse

First cleanse with Codex Beauty Bia Exfoliating Wash. Wet skin for a gentler scrub or apply it on dry skin for a deeper cleanse. Either way, this scrub is a lot gentler than most others; it’s more like a polish. The grains, made from jojoba oil, are similar to a wax, so there’s no roughness, just effective light polishing. And castor oil and milk thistle draw grease and grime from the skin without drying it out.

Step 2: Target

Next, pat on Codex Beauty Bia Eye Gel Cream. This brightening and cooling eye gel gives you an instant tightening effect due to the aloe vera gel and special formulation we created with xanthan gum. The arnica in here also helps de-puff the eyes by improving circulation.

Step 3: Hydrate

Layer on Codex Beauty Bia Facial Oil to get the ultimate hydration boost. We choose thin and dry oils so that this elixir is really well absorbed into the skin instead of collecting in the pores. Seaweed-infused oil—which is hand harvested off the west coast of Ireland—provides a full range of vitamins and minerals, along with sea buckthorn, rosehip oil and soothing bog myrtle essential oil.

Step 4: Protect

Seal everything in with Codex Beauty Bia Day Cream: this is wonderfully light but really does the job in terms of hydration. It has oil and water infusions of calendula to deliver all the best constituents from the plant. Then we add plant-derived hyaluronic acid and the scent is just a little mandarin essential oil, which balances sebum levels. This cream is also good in warm weather or for those with combination skin.
And finally, if you need more moisture, try Codex Beauty Bia Skin Superfood with the BiaComplex designed to deeply hydrate the skin in different ways. Use it on dry, chapped hands and face, and as a night cream (or use it in place of Day Cream).

Codex Beauty Labs carries some of the most important seals in the industry - can you talk us through it?

At Codex Beauty Labs, independent certifications are a fundamental part of our brand transparency—and an important component of trust with our customers. They’re crucial for verifying that our products are not only high quality but safe and actually deliver on their claims.

It can take anywhere from three months to a year to receive certifications. Often times many aspects are analyzed—from ingredients to sub-suppliers’ raw materials and their processing methods. For a young brand like Codex Beauty, it’s somewhat unusual to earn multiple certifications so early on. As scientists and innovators, this is something we’re extremely proud of.

But not all certifications are created equal—and carry the same weight. And since we believe in quality over quantity, we only applied to certification programs that challenge brands to comply with the very strictest standards—and are assessed by third-party organizations.

Our Bia Collection has obtained Cosmos Organic, EWG, Vegan & Cruelty Free, PEFC certifications and most recently achieved Microbiome-friendly certification, according to the MyMicrobiome Standard.

Verifying the safety and effectiveness of ingredients is fundamental to our commitment to transparency as declared in our Codex "Beauty Code", the guiding principles of the Codex Beauty Labs brand.
