What is Vitamin C?
Vitamin C, also known as L-ascorbic acid (in its purest form), is a naturally occurring water-soluble antioxidant with the ability to maintain collagen production. Since collagen is the most abundant form of protein in the body, it is essential for a radiant, glowing and plump complexion. Increasing collagen production can keep wrinkles and fine lines at bay. So, if you have not added a vitamin C product to your skincare routine yet, here are all the reasons why you should start now.
What does Vitamin C do for my skin?
Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant and skin brightener. It protects the skin from environmental damage and promotes cell renewal and collagen production. It brightens a dull complexion, evens skin tone, softens the appearance of blemishes, smooths fine lines and reduces scarring. It is easy to incorporate into your skincare routine as it is a very active ingredient but causes little irritation when used in low concentrations.
Using a Vitamin C serum everyday will work as an antioxidant to protect your skin from the harmful UV rays, and that’s why it’s great for treating sun-related hyperpigmentation and dark circles under the eyes. L-Ascorbic acid is the most common and most researched form of Vitamin C, but there are other, more powerful, variants out there.
Here’s some of our favourite vitamin C skincare formulas:
SUNDAY RILEY C.E.O. BRIGHTENING SERUM
Sunday Riley offers a serum that uses Tetrahexyldecyl (THD) ascorbate, a potent vitamin C that is more stable than L-Ascorbic acid and is said to be up to 50 times more effective. C.E.O. Brightening Serum contains 15% advanced vitamin C and is designed to quickly combat the appearance of dullness, dark spots and discolouration while reducing the signs of ageing. Skin looks and feels firmer and plumper.
MEDIK8 C-TETRA LUXE
Medik8 offer vitamin C serums in various strengths, but our favourite is the C-Tetra Luxe. This is a lipid THD Ascorbate serum that ensures deep penetration into the skin giving instant, and we mean instant, brightness whilst also protecting and strengthening the microbiome.
SKINCEUTICALS PHLORETIN CF
When it comes to vitamin C products, SkinCeuticals Phloretin CF Gel demands a mention. This serum-to-gel contains 10% pure L-Ascorbic acid, but with the addition of phloretin, an ingredient derived from apples and apple trees that is not only an antioxidant itself, but also improves the penetration of other ingredients. Ferulic Acid stabilises the L-Ascorbic acid and the power of vitamin C is absorbed deep into the skin layers.
NATURA BISSE C+C EYE CREAM
Natura Bissé C+C Vitamin Eye is a luxurious gel-cream that combines high concentrations of various vitamin C sources for maximum effectiveness. A cocktail of beneficial ingredients, including ginseng, caffeine and encapsulated Ascorbic Acid, the fast-absorbing formula helps minimise the appearance of dark circles and under-eye bags for a more radiant, youthful appearance.
111SKIN VITAMIN C BRIGHTENING BOOSTER
111SKIN Vitamin C Brightening Booster combines pure vitamin C with glutathione, which protects cells from oxidative damage and supports the healthy production of collagen, hyaluronic acid and elastin in the skin. Liquorice Root, a powerful botanical tyrosinase inhibitor, brightens skin, evens skin tone and reduces hyperpigmentation. Added to the advanced formula is Citric Acid, which helps deliver the ingredients deeper into the skin without causing irritation.
