Tips for Soothing & Treating Rosacea

Tips for Soothing & Treating Rosacea

What is rosacea? This common inflammatory skin condition causes redness or flushing and visible blood vessels, primarily affecting the face.

As rosacea is a long-term condition, it's important to incorporate skincare to support the skin's natural barrier function to strengthen protection. This Rosacea Awareness Month, read our tips and selection of formulas that you can use to soothe and treat rosacea.

1. Understand what triggers flares and irritates your skin

The exact cause of rosacea is unknown, but it is thought to be caused by a combination of factors, including the following:

Genetics: Rosacea is more common in people who have a family history of the condition.
Inflammation: Rosacea is thought to be an inflammatory condition.
Environmental factors: Certain environmental factors, such as sunlight, wind, and heat, can trigger rosacea flares.
Dietary factors: Some foods and drinks, such as alcohol, spicy foods, and caffeine, can trigger rosacea flares.
Stress: Stress can also trigger rosacea flares.

Once you know what could be triggers your rosacea flares, try to avoid them.

2. Use a gentle cleanser

To avoid clogging of pores, go for products that are non-comedogenic as well as fragrance-free, to help prevent irritation while making sure to be careful with products with retinoids or salicylic acid. It's also important to use a gentle cleanser twice a day, morning and night, but avoid over-washing your face as this can strip away the natural oils that protect your skin, which can make rosacea worse.

Puri-Rosalgin Face Gel Wash from the Pharmaceris R collection formulated specifically to target Rosacea with soothing ingredients such as betaine, d-panthenol, allantoin and lime water. This extremely gentle soap-free cleanser helps maintain the skin's physiological balance without compromising the protective barrier. It also includes Allantoin and D-panthenol to reduce the skin's tendency to inflammation and soothing irritation.

If you have any concerns about choosing a cleanser, or if your rosacea is severe, you should see a dermatologist who can help you choose the right cleanser and other treatments to help control your symptoms.

3. Moisturise frequently

This is a vital step in rosacea skin care. When dry, the skin can become irritated and inflamed, which can worsen the redness and flushing associated with rosacea. Moisturising helps to keep your skin hydrated and protected from external irritants, which can help to reduce inflammation and improve the overall appearance of your skin.

Once again, go for fragrance-free and hypoallergenic moisturisers, such as Dermalogica's Calm Water Gel from the UltraCalming range, a weightless moisturiser formulated with dual Hyaluronic Acid technology to deeply hydrate and lock in moisture.

The Dermalogica UltraCalming range provides serious relief for sensitive skin. Formulated with the best of science and nature’s pharmacy the UltraCalming formulas contain an ingredient complex to fortify skin's protective barrier for healthier skin. Every UltraCalming product is formulated without lanolin, SD alcohol, mineral oil, artificial fragrances or colours, which can make sensitive skin worse

4. Always protect your skin from the sun

Sun exposure is one of the biggest triggers for rosacea flares. The sun's ultraviolet rays can irritate the skin and make rosacea symptoms worse, which is why it's important to wear sunscreen every day and all year round.

To avoid irritation of your sensitive skin, broad-spectrum sun creams will protect against both UVA and UVB rays. Look for a sunscreen with a physical (mineral) filter, such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. This means that the product sits on top of the skin and reflect the sun's rays away, while chemical sunscreens absorb the sun's rays, which can be irritating for people with rosacea.

Specialising in formulas for the health sensitive skin, Avene provides the Antirougeurs Cream SPF30 which protects against the hamful effects of UVA/UVB and has naturally softening Avène Thermal Spring Water and TRP-Regulin™, a patented active ingredient that reduces the sensations of skin reactivity.
