Something genuinely changes in how the body works through the darker months, and understanding that shift is the key to supporting your energy sensibly - rather than reaching for a second coffee and hoping a supplement will do the rest. A considered vitamin routine for winter fatigue has a place, but it works best alongside the daylight, movement and steady meals that no capsule can replace.
Why winter actually tires the body
Two seasonal changes do most of the work. The first is light. Your body clock is set largely by daylight, especially bright light in the first part of the day. When you wake before sunrise and travel home after dark, that signal weakens, which can leave sleep less refreshing and mornings harder even when the hours in bed are unchanged. Getting outside in daylight when you can - a short walk at lunchtime is often enough - is one of the most effective and least glamorous things you can do for winter energy. The second change is how we live in the cold. We move less, spend more time indoors, and eat richer, more frequent meals through a long social season. Public health guidance advises adults and children over the age of one to consider a daily supplement containing 10 micrograms of vitamin D throughout autumn and winter.
Vitamin D contributes to the normal function of the immune system, normal muscle function and the maintenance of normal bones and teeth - and the immune role is especially worth having in place through the cold-and-flu season. These roles make it a sensible seasonal essential, although it is not a stimulant and should not be expected to create an immediate feeling of energy.

D3 is usually derived from lanolin, while vegan D3 products are commonly made from lichen. If you spend very little time outdoors, wear clothes that cover most of your skin when outside, have darker skin, live in a care home or are pregnant or breastfeeding, year-round supplementation may be advised. B vitamins for normal energy-yielding metabolism
This is where the winter table becomes relevant. B vitamins have an established role in normal energy-yielding metabolism - in plain terms, they help the body convert the food you eat into usable energy, which matters through a season of richer, more frequent meals. Vitamins B6 and B12, along with folate, also contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. This makes them relevant to a winter routine, especially for people whose diet is limited, whose appetite has changed or who follow a dietary pattern that may make certain nutrients harder to obtain.
Vitamin B12 deserves particular attention for people following a vegan diet, as it is found naturally in animal-derived foods. Older adults and people taking certain medicines may also be at greater risk of low B12 status, as absorption can be affected. Folate is found in leafy green vegetables, pulses and fortified foods, while B6 appears in foods including poultry, fish, potatoes and chickpeas.
A balanced B-complex can be a convenient option where several B vitamins are required. However, it should not be used to explain away ongoing exhaustion. Symptoms associated with deficiency can overlap with many other conditions, and B12 or folate status can be assessed by a healthcare professional where appropriate. Avoid taking high-dose vitamin B6 for prolonged periods unless advised, as excessive intakes may cause harm.
The UK shortfalls that matter for energy metabolism
The B vitamins are not the only nutrients involved in turning food into energy. Several minerals contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism too, and they are worth knowing because they are among the ones UK diets most often fall short on. The logic here is important, and it is easy to get wrong: these nutrients are part of the normal machinery by which the body releases energy from food, including fats. If you are genuinely short of one, that everyday process has less to work with. Correcting a real shortfall supports normal metabolism - but taking more than you need does not "speed up" or "boost" anything, and any product suggesting otherwise is overpromising.
Iodine is the clearest example. It contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and normal thyroid function, and UK intakes have become marginal for people who have moved away from dairy and white fish - a common shift. That said, iodine is emphatically not a "metabolism booster" to take at high doses for tiredness or weight, and too much can disturb the thyroid as easily as too little, so it belongs with pharmacy advice, particularly in pregnancy or with a thyroid condition. Iron is essential for normal oxygen transport in the body and contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Yet iron supplementation is not a universal answer to feeling tired in winter. Taking it when it is not needed can cause digestive discomfort, including nausea, constipation and stomach pain, and excessive iron can be harmful.
People who menstruate heavily, are pregnant, follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, donate blood regularly or have digestive conditions may be more likely to develop low iron stores. Symptoms such as persistent fatigue, breathlessness, paleness, heart palpitations, headaches or difficulty concentrating deserve proper assessment rather than guesswork.
If a test confirms low iron, the dose and form can make a meaningful difference to tolerance. Some people find gentler iron formulations easier on the stomach, while others need a dose recommended by their clinician. Tea and coffee can reduce iron absorption when taken close to a supplement or iron-rich meal, whereas vitamin C can support absorption of non-haem iron from plant foods.
Do not overlook food and hydration
Supplements work best as part of a pattern that supports steady energy. Winter meals can be both comforting and nutrient-rich: eggs with wholegrain toast, porridge with fruit and seeds, lentil soup, oily fish, dark leafy greens, yoghurt and fortified dairy alternatives all have a place.
Movement deserves the same billing as any nutrient here. A brisk daily walk, ideally in daylight, does more for winter energy than most supplements - it helps the body use the energy from richer seasonal meals, supports sleep and lifts mood during the darkest weeks. It is also easy to underestimate hydration when the weather is cold. Central heating, more caffeine and fewer reminders to drink can leave you feeling flat or headachy. Keep water, herbal tea or a warm caffeine-free drink within reach, particularly if your day involves long meetings, travel or heated indoor spaces.
Make the routine easy to maintain
A supplement only helps when it becomes a consistent habit. Take a daily vitamin D or multivitamin with a meal, ideally at the same point in your day. A breakfast routine suits many people, while those who skip breakfast may prefer lunch or an evening meal. Fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamin D, are generally best taken with food containing some fat.
Choose the format you will genuinely use. Capsules and tablets offer precision and convenience, while liquid drops, oral sprays and gummies may be preferable for those who dislike swallowing tablets. The best format depends on personal preference, dietary requirements and the nutrients included, rather than appearance alone.
Before adding a new product, read the label in full. Check the amount provided per daily serving, whether the formula duplicates nutrients already in use, and whether it is suitable for pregnancy, breastfeeding, vegan diets or particular allergies. Keep a simple note of what you take and why. This is especially valuable if you use prescription medicines or discuss supplements with a pharmacist or GP.
When fatigue needs more than a supplement
Seasonal sluggishness is common, but persistent or worsening fatigue should not be dismissed as an inevitable feature of winter. Seek professional advice if tiredness lasts for several weeks, affects daily life, comes with unexplained weight change, low mood, shortness of breath, chest pain, frequent dizziness, changes in bowel habits or disrupted sleep.
Fatigue may be associated with anaemia, thyroid concerns, sleep disorders, low mood, infection, medication effects or other health conditions. Blood tests can help identify deficiencies and prevent unnecessary supplementation. This is particularly important before starting iron, high-dose vitamin D or multiple high-strength products.
