Heartburn is a symptom of acid reflux. Heartburn occurs when stomach acid backs up into the oesophagus and irritates the lining. This can happen when the valve at the lower end of the oesophagus does not close properly. Acid reflux symptoms are often caused by lifestyle choices such as eating large meals, drinking alcohol or caffeinated beverages, smoking cigarettes, lying down soon after eating or wearing tight clothing that puts pressure on the abdomen.
