Calcium is best known for bones and teeth, and for good reason – it's the most abundant mineral in the body and contributes to their maintenance. But it does more besides, contributing to normal muscle function, normal neurotransmission and normal blood clotting. Your body can't make calcium itself, so it all has to come from your diet.

Most people can get the calcium they need from a balanced, varied diet – dairy is the best-known source, but there's plenty outside the dairy aisle too, from leafy greens to oily fish and fortified foods. If you're lactose intolerant, follow a vegan diet, or simply aren't a fan of dairy, reaching the recommended amount can be harder, and a supplement is a simple way to top up. Because your body needs vitamin D to absorb calcium well, many calcium supplements include some vitamin D too.
