To Combat Hygiene Poverty & Reduce Beauty Industry Waste

John Bell & Croyden partners with Toiletries Amnesty, a pioneering non-profit organisation dedicated to tackling hygiene poverty and reducing waste in the beauty industry. From its Harley Street base, the pharmacy is calling on customers, suppliers, and organisations to donate and support unopened and unused toiletries to support the mission to end hygiene poverty.

Founded by Karen Harvey MBE, Toiletries Amnesty connects surplus toiletries from individuals and brands to a vast network of support services, including homeless shelters, women’s refuges, NHS services, food banks, and mental health organisations. This partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to tackling hygiene poverty while preventing thousands of kilograms of usable products from going to waste.

Toiletries Amnesty is the first organisation in the UK to address hygiene poverty and remains the only public directory that enables individuals and businesses to track the impact of their donations within their local communities and further afield.

Making a

Meaningful Difference

In 2024 alone, Toiletries Amnesty supported over 1000 locations, across 18 countries, helping over 6 million people. By redistributing surplus items, the organisation prevented more than thousands of kilograms of usable products from being wasted, significantly reducing CO2 emissions and supporting global sustainability efforts.

Karen Harvey, recently awarded an MBE for her work, said:

"Our mission is twofold: ensuring everyone has access to essential hygiene products and preventing usable items from ending up in landfills. Hygiene poverty may be a hidden issue, but with small actions from many people, we can create big change—for individuals and the planet."

Toiletries Amnesty has been pivotal in disaster relief efforts, including their 2022 Ukraine appeal and a partnership with the Caribbean Peoples Foundation to support victims of Hurricane Beryl in St Vincent and the Grenadines. Together, these initiatives saw the delivery of £400,000 worth each of hygiene products to both charities, helping those in need.

 A Collaborative Vision

John Bell & Croyden’s partnership with Toiletries Amnesty marks a major step forward in addressing hygiene poverty and promoting sustainability in the beauty industry.

Alexander Johnston, General Manager of John Bell & Croyden, said:

"Hygiene poverty is a hidden issue, but together we can tackle it. We are delighted to be involved and urge our customers, suppliers, and journalists to support this vital work by donating their unused and unwanted toiletries."
