When it comes to feet, there's really only one name that comes up again and again: Margaret Dabbs, OBE. She's spent decades changing how we think about foot care, and as the founder of Margaret Dabbs® London, she's become something of a legend in the world of medical foot health.

In our conversation, she opens up about the daily habits that actually make a difference to your feet, the products she swears by, and the professional secrets that'll keep your feet happy, comfortable, and sandal-ready right through summer.

As a foot care expert, what's something you wish more people understood about looking after their feet?

One of the biggest misconceptions is that our feet only need attention when there's a problem. In reality, feet go through the ageing process in exactly the same way as the rest of the body (muscle laxity, reduction in sweat glands and dehydration, thinning skin), and regular preventative care is the key to maintaining healthy feet. Medical pedicures are an excellent way to do this, as podiatrists can identify, diagnose and treat a wide range of foot conditions before they become more serious.

At home, a simple daily routine makes all the difference. Keep your feet clean and dry, check them regularly for any changes, and moisturise every day with a dedicated foot cream such as Margaret Dabbs® London Foot Hygiene Cream or Margaret Dabbs® London Intensive Hydrating Foot Lotion. Consistent foot care not only prevents common problems but keeps feet healthy, comfortable and functioning at their very best.

What are the three products you recommend everyone uses to get their feet sandal-ready?

Preparing your feet for sandal season doesn't need to be complicated – it's all about consistency. My three essentials are the Margaret Dabbs® London Professional Foot File, Margaret Dabbs® London Intensive Treatment Foot Oil, and either Margaret Dabbs® London Intensive Hydrating Foot Lotion or Margaret Dabbs® London Foot Hygiene Cream.

Start by using the Professional Foot File once a week on dry skin to gently remove hard or dry skin. Follow with the Intensive Treatment Foot Oil, massaging it into the toenails and surrounding skin to nourish the nails and cuticles. Finally, apply your chosen foot cream every day to deeply hydrate and maintain the skin. This simple routine will keep feet soft, smooth and healthy while helping to prevent the build-up of hard skin.

Why should we be using a dedicated foot cream instead of our regular body moisturiser?

The skin on our feet is very different from the skin on the rest of the body – it's up to 15 times thicker, which means it needs products specifically formulated to penetrate and moisturise effectively.

Our dedicated expert foot creams contain antibacterial, antifungal and anti-inflammatory benefits, together with targeted ingredients that hydrate, nourish and protect this thicker skin far more effectively than a standard body moisturiser. We wouldn't use a face cream on our body because facial skin has different needs, and the same principle applies to our feet. Products such as Margaret Dabbs® London Foot Hygiene Cream and Margaret Dabbs® London Intensive Hydrating Foot Lotion have been specifically developed to care for the unique structure of the feet, delivering treatment alongside long-lasting hydration for healthier feet

How can people prevent blisters, hard skin and sore feet during summer?

The best way to prevent common summer foot problems is to look after your feet, wear correctly fitting footwear, and keep the skin healthy before issues develop. Applying Margaret Dabbs® London Intensive Hydrating Foot Lotion or Margaret Dabbs® London Foot Hygiene Cream every day is one of the simplest ways to treat and protect your feet, while also helping to protect against the symptoms of Athlete's Foot.

Excessive sweating can also contribute to blisters, so using Margaret Dabbs® London PURE Soothing Foot Powder before putting on sandals or shoes helps keep the feet dry and reduces friction.

Hard skin is often caused by increased pressure on certain areas of the foot. While persistent or painful hard skin should be assessed by a podiatrist, regular use of the Margaret Dabbs® London Professional Foot File on dry skin, followed by daily moisturising, will keep hard skin under control and your feet comfortable throughout the summer

If you could only pack one Margaret Dabbs® London product for a summer holiday, which would it be and why?

This is a difficult one as our Professional Foot File is an absolute essential tool, but if I had to choose one product, it would be Margaret Dabbs® London Foot Hygiene Cream. It's the ultimate holiday essential because it does so much in one product. Whether you've spent the day walking around a city, relaxing on the beach or living in sandals, it hydrates, nourishes and refreshes tired feet while helping to maintain healthy skin and leaving them looking and feeling their very best.

It also contains antifungal properties, which help protect against common fungal infections that are more prevalent during the warmer months. It's a product that works just as hard at preventing problems as it does at treating them, making it an indispensable part of any holiday packing list.

What's the difference between dry feet and cracked heels, and how should each be treated?

Although they're often grouped together, dry feet and cracked heels are actually different conditions and should be treated slightly differently.

Dry feet are caused by a lack of moisture, leaving the skin feeling rough, flaky or tight. This can usually be improved by applying a dedicated foot moisturiser such as Margaret Dabbs® London Intensive Hydrating Foot Lotion or Margaret Dabbs® London Foot Hygiene Cream every day to restore hydration and maintain the skin barrier.

Cracked heels are a more advanced stage of dryness, where thickened skin develops painful splits or fissures. In this case, I recommend using the Margaret Dabbs® London Professional Foot File once a week on dry skin to gently reduce the hard skin, followed by daily application of Margaret Dabbs® London PURE Cracked Heel Treatment Balm, which is specifically formulated to soften, repair and protect cracked heels.
